Organic Food Benefits – You Are What You Eat!

When it comes to eating right the idea; “you are what you eat” leads to some interesting questions. Organic food benefits from the idea, conventional farming techniques leave us wondering about this question. In organic agriculture food is grown, and raised without the toxic chemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides used in conventional farming practices. This prohibition of nasty, toxic chemicals guarantees that these do not end up in the ground water, soil, or air. More importantly, this ensures you don’t consume these chemicals.

While the direct health effects of most of the chemicals used in conventional farming are unknown, this is more a case of not enough study data, than anything else. While I can not tell you that these chemicals will harm you there has been recent research to suggest that it probably isn’t wise to overly expose yourself to these chemicals.

These recent studies have shown that the chemicals used in conventional farming practices may be a possible link to breast cancer amongst female farm workers, and ADHD in small children. While the research is as yet inconclusive, there is a correlation that leads researchers to suspect these chemicals may indeed be at fault. Research continues, meanwhile those with a vested interest in mass farming, and corporate agriculture continue to tout that there the research is lacking for the benefits of organic foods.

Choosing a Great Organic Restaurant – 7 Tips for Knowing Whether It’s Worth a Visit

As more and more people realize the benefits of organic food, new organic restaurants are popping up all over the country. But don’t let the sign fool you: Organic dives are just as common as the proverbial greasy spoon diner. Here are a few tips to help you determine whether the organic restaurant in your neighborhood is worth a visit or is just cashing in on the hype.

1. Is the organic food fresh? One of the great benefits of organic food is the lack of harmful chemicals. But for some organic produce, fewer chemicals also means shorter shelf life. To find out whether the food in the organic restaurant is fresh, just order a basic salad. If the lettuce is wilted or the cucumber is mushy, the manager is keeping organic vegetables too long in order to cut costs.

2. Does it have a good menu? Look over the menu. If you wouldn’t eat it at a traditional restaurant, odds are you won’t like it at an organic restaurant, either. Good menus have items that appeal to a variety of tastes. If you see items you know you like on your organic restaurant’s menu, there’s a much better chance you’ll enjoy your meal.
